Navigating NDIS Funding for Your Child's Therapy

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) has transformed access to therapy and support for thousands of Australian children and families. But for many parents, the process of accessing, understanding, and making the most of NDIS funding can feel bewildering — especially when you're already navigating the challenges that come with supporting a child with a disability or developmental delay.
At Queensland Therapy Centre, we work with NDIS participants every day, and we're very familiar with the questions families have. This guide is intended to give you a practical overview of how the NDIS works, what types of funding are available for therapy, and how to make your plan work as hard as possible for your child.
Is My Child Eligible for the NDIS?
To be eligible for the NDIS, a child must be under 65 years of age, be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and have a permanent disability that significantly affects their ability to participate in daily activities. For young children under 7, there is a specific early intervention pathway which recognises that early support can make a profound difference to long-term outcomes — and eligibility requirements are somewhat broader for this group.
Common diagnoses that may support an NDIS application include autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, global developmental delay, Down syndrome, and hearing or vision impairment, among others. A diagnosis alone doesn't guarantee eligibility — the key is demonstrating how the condition affects your child's daily functioning.
Understanding Your Child's NDIS Plan
Once a child is approved for the NDIS, they receive an individualised plan with a funding budget. This budget is divided into three broad support categories: Core Supports (day-to-day assistance), Capital Supports (equipment and technology), and Capacity Building Supports. Therapy — including speech pathology, occupational therapy, behaviour support, and psychology — typically falls under Capacity Building, specifically within the 'Improved Daily Living' category.
Your child's plan will specify a dollar amount for each category. It's important to understand that this funding isn't a fixed prescription — it's a flexible budget that you manage to best meet your child's needs within the goals outlined in the plan.
How to Use NDIS Funding with Queensland Therapy Centre
Queensland Therapy Centre is a registered NDIS provider, which means we can deliver services directly to NDIS participants. We accept all three management types: NDIA-managed (where the NDIS pays us directly), plan-managed (where a plan manager handles invoicing), and self-managed (where you pay us and claim reimbursement from the NDIS portal).
When you first contact us, let us know your child is an NDIS participant and share their plan goals. Our team will work with you to design a therapy program that aligns with your child's NDIS goals and makes the most effective use of your funding. We also provide detailed progress reports that can be used at your plan review to support continued or increased funding.
Plan Reviews — Making the Most of Them
NDIS plans are typically reviewed annually, though they can be reviewed earlier if your child's needs change significantly. Plan reviews are an opportunity to increase funding, add new supports, or adjust the balance of your budget based on what's worked well and what your child needs next.
Good documentation is key to a successful plan review. Our therapists provide comprehensive progress reports that clearly describe what goals have been worked on, what progress has been made, and what continued or new supports are recommended. We can also write functional capacity assessments and support letters for plan reviews on request.
Getting Support to Navigate the NDIS
You don't have to navigate the NDIS alone. Support Coordinators are NDIS-funded professionals who can help you understand your plan, connect with providers, and ensure your funding is being used effectively. If your child's plan includes Support Coordination, we strongly recommend using it — particularly in the early stages when the system can feel most overwhelming.
Our team at Queensland Therapy Centre is also happy to help you understand how your funding works and to answer any questions about how therapy services fit within your child's plan. We're here to support the whole family — not just the therapy session.
Taking the First Step
If your child doesn't yet have an NDIS plan and you think they may be eligible, the first step is to contact the NDIS directly at 1800 800 110 or visit ndis.gov.au to begin the access process. Your child's paediatrician, GP, or existing therapist can help gather the supporting evidence needed for an application.
If you already have a plan and you'd like to start therapy with us, simply get in touch. We'll guide you through the onboarding process, ensure the paperwork is straightforward, and focus on what matters most — getting your child the support they need to thrive.
